Adjustable dumbbell recalls you should know about

Updated

Adjustable dumbbells have had several CPSC recalls since 2024, and every one names the same hazard: weight plates that can come off the handle during use. This matters most if you buy used, or if you already own an older set. We read each notice below on cpsc.gov on September 19, 2026.

The BowFlex recall in detail

This is the big one. The CPSC notice covers the BowFlex 552 and 1090, sold in pairs and as singles from as early as 2004 through May 2025, at stores including DICK'S Sporting Goods and Best Buy and online at Amazon and BowFlex's own site. Nautilus, which sold them before May 2024, received 337 reports of plates dislodging, including 111 injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes and contusions. Johnson Health Tech Trading, which took over the brand, received 12 reports with no injuries.

The notice tells owners to stop using the recalled dumbbells and contact Johnson Health Tech Trading. The remedy depends on who sold the unit: a refund as a voucher or a replacement for units Johnson sold, and a prorated voucher plus a one-year JRNY membership for units sold by the old BowFlex company. The model and serial number are on a sticker under the plastic tray, and the notice lists the serial ranges.

What BowFlex sells now

BowFlex's current FAQ says the SelectTech dumbbells available for purchase now are not involved in any recalls. The Results Series 552 and Results Series 1090 on this site carry new model numbers, BFW0025-OS and BFW0024-OS, on their Amazon listings. They are new enough that owner feedback is thin, and several early owners of the 552 already report the lock breaking. We will keep watching.

The other picks

The recalled NordicTrack was the voice-controlled iSelect, not the manual Select-a-Weight we list. The recalled PowerBlock was a commercial Pro 100 set, not the Elite EXP. We found no CPSC recall notice for Core Fitness, Ativafit or FLYBIRD adjustable dumbbells in our search of cpsc.gov. That is not proof there will never be one.

If you are buying used

  1. Ask for a photo of the sticker under the tray. For BowFlex, compare the serial number with the ranges in the CPSC notice.
  2. Walk away from any 552 or 1090 made before the recall unless the seller can show it was replaced.
  3. Test every setting. Lift it an inch out of the tray and look at both ends.
  4. Register a new set with the maker so a recall notice can reach you.
