Weight increments: the jumps between settings

Updated

A jump that sounds small can be huge next to a light weight. Going from 5 to 10 lb doubles the load. Going from 15 to 25 lb adds 67 percent. Going from 5 to 7.5 lb adds 50 percent, which is still a lot, but it is a step most people can take. Count the settings and look at the first jump before you look at the top weight.

Why the jump matters

The National Institute on Aging describes strength work as sets of eight to 12 repetitions, done to the point where another repetition would be hard. Say you can do 12 lateral raises with 10 lb. If the next setting is 15 lb, that is 50 percent more, and you may not get close to eight. With a 12.5 lb setting the step is 25 percent. Small muscles feel this most. Rows and squats handle 5 lb jumps far better, since 5 lb on top of 40 is only 12 percent.

What each maker gives you

A small print note

BowFlex adds a footnote to its settings lists: because of manufacturing tolerances, a setting may vary from its stated weight. Expect that from any plate-loaded dumbbell. It does not change which set fits you.

If your set has big jumps

Safety note. This page is general information, not medical or training advice. If you are new to lifting or have a health condition, talk with your doctor first. Check that every plate is locked before each lift.
